Freshers Edition!
Fresher’s Fair
23 Sept 2025 – Welcome (back) to Leeds, everyone! We hope you had an amazing summer break and are ready to kick off the new semester. Freshers Week can feel like a rollercoaster. Some of you might be excited, while some are feeling nervous about moving thousands of kilometres away from home. Don't worry — you’ll feel right at home before you know it!
On September 23rd, LUMSoc participated in the University's Freshers Fair, where we set up our own (beautifully decorated!) booth to welcome students arriving in Leeds. Usually, the first thing Malaysian students want to find out is what the Malaysian society is up to in the country they're studying. During the fair, our committee members introduced what LUMSoc is all about — from GIAG events like Jom Lah Mamak to flagship events like the Leeds Malaysian Night. Of course, we made sure to prepare free Malaysian snacks to "bait" the students to come and visit us (the Pandan-flavoured Apollo was definitely everyone's favourite).
Not to forget, we also took the opportunity to promote our membership cards (special shoutout to our creative designers, Syazana and Aijaz!), which offer students discounts from restaurants and shops, as well as exclusive prices and free entries to our events.
It was so heartwarming to see many curious faces and the students' excitement to know more about LUMSoc. To those who stopped by to say hi — thank you so much! LUMSoc can't wait to meet you guys again at our future events this academic term.
Fresher’s Day
5 Oct 2025 – It’s back to school season! New faces arrived in Leeds and what better to welcome them than a good old LUMSoc Fresher’s Day! At first glance, you would think these people knew each other since birth, the way everybody was striking conversations left and right. That was how quickly everybody broke the ice!
Of course, introductions followed, where (mostly) everybody got to know the current LUMSoc committee, and what LUMSoc does and will be up to in the future! Future events, collaborations, new and old, and the good stuff (discounts!) helped the fresher’s get up to speed, and calmed the seniors down. (don’t worry, the Charcos discount won't be going any time soon) As for every icebreaking event, we went ahead with games! No innovations here, just proven classics – telefon rosak, charades, and pisang goreng – to just get the blood pumping for what’s next. Lunch! (hey, it’s a big deal okay) Special thanks to the efforts of our chefs, our runners, and most importantly, Chimaek Oppa, who stacked the food lineup with tteokbokki and korean fried chicken.
You really thought we were just leaving it at that? Of course we came prepared! A slightly outdoors-y twist on the Fresher’s Day Campus Tour: The Campus Tour Bingo! [give it a try] Fresher’s (and seniors) get the chance to not only see parts of campus they’ve never been to before, but they also got the chance to see places they’ve absolutely never been before! (yayyyy) The creator of the bingo board must’ve been evil or something, as most of the locations proved hard for even the most dedicated of seniors to find! (seriously though, where IS the Institute for Medieval Studies?)
